¿Qué no me gustó?

This book series is so good when it comes to the worldbuilding and history and everything, but the plot is insanely sluggish. Each book in the series is about 600+ pages which leads to such slow progress, and so much of it could be cut out because a lot of it is just the characters spelling out their current moral dilemma even though it should be inferrable. In terms of characters, my favourites are probably Sev and Kade, whose relationship I actually really like, and Elliot. I think his redemption arc and friendship with Sparrow is really good to read. I do like Tristan, though I don’t like the role he was placed into for this book. He neglected his patrol way too much and his feelings for Veronyka became her entire personality. Veronyka is a good character, but her being an Ashfire and becoming second/patrol leader just feels too quick for her initial arc of earning everything herself. I don’t know. I’m interested to see how this ends because I think this book did suffer from the usual book two slump.

I love this series SO MUCH. Easily a new favorite. The dynamic between Val and Veronyka is the perfect blend of love and toxic and shows how family is complicated. I love the way this series reveals the pst without relying too heavily on flashbacks or characters telling stories. I. Am. Invested.

I didn’t think I could be any more emotionally destroyed than after reading Crown of Feathers but then Nicki Pau Preto pulled out her Google Docs for this book and said “Hold my drink 🩷” and RUINED me.
