Absurd Plot and a Lot of Fun

Like classic scifi, this book has little character development or subtlety. If I stopped and thought about the plot, I’d laugh out loud. But it’s a genuine page-turner and a good read in the space opera tradition. I’ll definitely read the next one.

I’m not saying this book is bad at all. It just felt like an inconvenient story plot to me. Some things seem like under-effect and other over-effect. More former than latter...I would admit that near the ending. It was a nice surprise but too little and too late.

Really enjoyed this book. Took me 2 long because it's a mass market paperback.

Liked it, was good and interesting enough to go find the others in the series now...

Should have read this back in high school when my brother recommended it. Still, the last 100 pages did go awfully quick.

After a recommendation that this was enjoyable military-SF I thought I'd take a punt while it was on offer in a Kindle Daily Deal. And as it turns out I fair enjoyed this occasionally fast-paced action-adventure, set against a background of broadly familiar UFO mythology. In-between the action scenes are history dumps that link enough fact with the fantastical fiction to readily blur the lines between the two. I quite liked that.

Overall a light, easy read that entertained for a few hours - it reminded me of a wham-bam summer blockbuster action movie quite a few times - certainly enough that I carried straight onto book #2 in the series.

After reading The Jefferson Allegiance I sought out other books by Bob Mayer and picked Area 51, which is the first of a series of nine books. Being hooked, I kept reading one book after another in the series until I was through all nine. The book (and series) starts with the disclosure that the rumors about Area 51 are true. The U.S. does have an alien space craft there where we learn a secret government agency is working hard to learn how to fly. The book's heros, a Green Beret named Mike Turcott and the President's science advisor Lisa Duncan, unravel the mystery of Area 51 and in the process discover how much human history relates to an alien race. Through the series the "truth" behind legends like Excalibur and landmarks like the Pyramids are revealed.
