As a geneticist this book taught me a lot about the way we view Genetics and how it can shape our inherent biases about people. It's a fantastic read for everyone and makes understanding Genetics clear while also reiterating how little we know about Genetics.

After getting my BRCA1 diagnosis in January, learning anything and everything I can about not only BRCA, but about myself and DNA and genetics really became an obsession. Although it tapered off after a while, I’m still glad to pick up books like this one every now and again.

In DNA is not Destiny, Steven Heine directly addresses the very human error we all make when learning about our genetics and DNA- DNA is only part of what shapes our future, not the whole story. Before getting into this Heine is sure to lay down some knowledge on DNA in the first place and what our DNA and probabilities for diseases really mean (a lesson that was pretty invigorating in itself).

Reading this somehow gave me more of a grasp of what makes me me and what my own genetic testing I have done/am contemplating getting means. When I first learned about my BRCA diagnosis, I immediately thought “preventative surgery” time. It’s books like this that remind me to take a step back, think it through, study it and make the choice that you really can feel good about. I feel more in control about the whole situation after reading this and other books like it. Thanks so much to Heine for taking the time to write this. So wonderfully done and so full of truth that needs to be considered before and even after getting genetic testing.
