It’s really good!

But there are too many “That makes no sense, unless… And then she understands.” and then I don’t understand for a while.

With the exception of the sjw trans character whose purpose I absolutely failed to grasp, this was an utterly enjoyable read, an original story for once in an over-saturated, clichéd genre, written in a way which at least suggested research and effort. It is not the kind of book I can honestly place on a pedestal as an adult reader with intellectual interests, but I can definitely call it a 5 star easy to read romp.

I really wanted to like this book, and I can understand why others did, but I just couldn't. I just found it boring. The world building was theoretically interesting, but I wasn't actually interested. It just came across as a little too esoteric for me, by the time I had finally started to understand the world, I was sick of the characters. Idk it just really didn't work for me

Pretty much everything you want from high fantasy: intrigue, origin stories, mysteries, relationship drama, plus fun additions you don't see as much in older books like casually queer characters and examination of caste/race.

It starts off like most HF where you're trying to keep names and terms straight for the first quarter, but once you're settled in it it cruises along. I hope the mysteries and setup from this book are handled well in the rest of the trilogy, as it's very promising.

A great read! I will admit I was confused by a lot of it, but once I figured out what was going on and the timelines, everything made more sense. I really like the world that is being built in the series!

Update on the second read (listen): this book was AMAZING to listen to! Definitely worth a re-read to get more out of it and it felt familiar so I wasn't confused and could just enjoy the story.
