May 2022. Comedy BL manga about a teen who starts to crush on his friend’s older brother after he finds out the older brother is a sort of cool bad boy “hero” that stops juvenile delinquents. Pretty fun, good but not amazing.
Got volume 1 through Sac library via the Link system that allows books to be traded between county systems, so that was cool! I enjoyed it but it’s in the “read from the library don’t buy” category for me. Apparently it was made into a manga as well.
I may look into getting other volumes through the link system in the future to check out.
“Hitorijime My Hero” volume 1 by Memeco Arii.

Like with a lot of the manga I've been picking up recently, I first got into this series through the anime. The anime was cute. While the main couple does involve a teacher and a student, the romance itself was pretty wholesome compared to other yaoi anime I've watched with a similar age gap and I liked the plot well enough. I thought I'd pick up the manga and check out where Masahiro's and Kousuke's relationship goes past the point that the anime stopped. Within a few pages of this volume, it became clear to me that that the anime made some major changes to the structure of the story and, in all honesty, I prefer the anime better. The first problem is that this series is a spin-off/continuation of a one volume story called Hitorijime My Boyfriend that shows Kousuke's brother Kensuke getting together with his boyfriend Asaya. If you haven't read this story before jumping into this one, then you're going to get really confused, really fast, because the author assumes that you know all of the characters and plot from there and dumps you face first into the middle of story with no explanation of how characters are related. The anime adapted My Boyfriend as part of My Hero, so I was able to follow along well enough, but I was still super confused to start with. The other thing that bothered me is that the manga is most definitely NOT PG or PG-13. Masahiro's and Kousuke's relationship is explicit pretty much right from the start and this makes the age gap and student/teacher part of their relationship really squicky. I had a really hard time getting behind it, especially since I could't understand why these two characters were together at all. I could understand what they saw in each other in the anime and loved them together, but here? Not so much.
For the sake of the anime and to sate my own curiosity, I may continue with this for a couple of volumes, just to see where it goes, but if it doesn't get any better, I'll just drop it.

Cute first volume.
I got a bit confused at the start and it turned out the version I was reading was missing a section which didn't help! But also so many of the characters look alike it was a bit hard to know who was who and some of the speech bubbles are in weird places so I lost track of who was talking.
Definitely invested in the main characters though so will be continuing!

So like a lot of people, I didnt realize this was a spinoff of another series when I picked it up, so it was VERY confusing. I never really knew what was going on, who was who, who was talking, etc. Def a let down:(

A former coworker left this behind when they moved, and I thought I'd broaden my manga horizons and check this out.
Yikes.
I suppose the story could be creepy as it's supposed to be about a teacher's eventual romantic relationship with a former student but it's just so badly written that I only know that from reading the blurb on the back and the reviews. I HOPE this was a translation issue, because I don't understand why, with the thousands of manga series in Japan, anyone would bother to translate this series if it's this bad in Japanese.
There's no coherency. No backstories for the characters, no narrative flow, no interesting dialogue, no romance, no depth to any of the characters, no humor, and nothing even fun about the book. It's rare to read something this completely empty of substance. It's like a terrible art student's abandoned outline of a book that was never destined to be interesting.
You'd get a better story reading the upside-down answers to crossword puzzles at the back of a newspaper. I'm thinking of packing it up and mailing it to the coworker's new address COD.

This was kinda mid? It’s not bad but it is my least favorite trope in BL. The beginning was VERY confusing but once I realized that this is a spin-off of the single volume Hitorijime Boyfriend, which I haven’t read, I understood. I don’t know if I’ll read that one cause I’ve heard it’s not the best. I unfortunately seized a chance and bought the box set of this so I have the first 6 volumes, so I’m determined to keep an open mind.
