This is a deep dive into a murder and kidnap in Oklahoma during the 1990s. The unique part of this book, that I cannot tell if I liked or not, is you get a lot of the author’s personal reflections as she was researching and reflecting on this true crime story. As she uncovers piles of corruption (as are in most true crime stories. Idk the reason we have true crime is because the police and any form of criminal justice are so fucked up and either drunk on power or bad at their jobs) you realize the danger that people can be in as they prod into stories like this. I thought it was well informed and really took into account the stories of family and friends left behind. Sometimes true crime stories or podcasts feel like they just sensationalize things and don’t take into consideration those who are still living and affected by the murders, but the author, in mixing a lot of her personal feelings and reflections, I thought did a good job of considering the lives and feelings of those who are still alive.

An interesting read, it meanders quite a bit but, there is a lot of twists and turns to get to the end.

Such an excellent look at this case. I heard about it in 2018 but I'm so happy to see a book come out about it because I feel like only podcasts have really touched it. It was very well written and in-depth.

DNF I gave up on the book 70% in. I could not stand the authors constant chatter about herself and her anxiety. There was scenes that were nothing but made up. How would you know what someone is doing walking alone. Terrible writing I hope this brought some light to the unsolved tragedy but this book is not a true crime read.
