David Nichols just captures Britain and the mundanity of life as well as the beauty. Aside from the going into the detail of the start of a love affair which he literally just said was boring to everyone else, I thought it was lovely. Funny and evocative the late 90s.

I did not like this as I expected I would. It was just not believable. I did not want to root for their love at all.

I tried to care, I really did but these characters and their storyline are just forgettable.

First loves are complicated things.
It could be your neighbour, your childhood best friend, that cartoon character with the great hair and laugh that seems to seep into all your dreams… eh yeah, it’s complicated.
‘Sweet Sorrows’ by David Nicholls is the type of book that captures that strangeness effortlessly. The quick wit, awkward stumbles, and how we change through these times. Big ups on the title choice by the way, I haven’t read a book that is so perfectly captured by its book title in a long time – the last probably being some classic I trudged through in my undergrad but still weirdly enjoyed.
However, it isn’t only about first loves, crushes, likes. The way David also deals with the harsh realities that Charlie is living through is so carefully dealt with yet completely honest, raw and brutal. It all captures life at the weird age. The hand touches, voice breaks amongst family hardships and life setting up to throw you into adulthood.
I have other David Nicholls on my TBR so I can’t wait to get to them next!
