An engaging read and an interesting follow up to Mind Of My Mind. I wish there was more interaction with the Clayarks and we got to see how their society developed after the events of Clay’s Ark. It is fascinating to consider the publication order of this series and the world-building intricacy that must have gone into it.

Coming from another writer, this would easily have earned three stars, but from Butler it felt disappointing. It doesn't cut it for me as a conclusion to the Patternmaster tetralogy - feels oddly incomplete, perhaps for lack of Clayark perspective. The fraternal conflict did not have the depth I'd have expected. I did appreciate a female bisexual main character from a genre novel written in the 70s. Look how far we (haven't) come.

Knowing this was set in the future, I expected more technology! I had no idea what I was getting into even after reading the other three books in the series. I actually do think all the interesting ideas in the series came from this book, and the others were just expanding the ideas presented here. (In the case of wild seed, an idea that is presented in only a sentence or two!)

Good stuff though! I liked this more than I expected to given the premise.

For me, Wild Seed was undeniably the best book of this series & potentially one of Octavia Butler’s best books. I had to see this out to the end, but I wouldn’t say it was my favorite of the series. An interesting & different hero’s journey type of story.
Also very interesting to see how the Patternmaster & Clay Ark universes have developed since the start of the series. So many years have passed. Butler’s world building is astonishing
