I loved the Hunger Games trilogy when I was younger, and I enjoyed delving back into the world-building and history of Panem. The characters all felt fairly one-dimensional (maybe they were in the original trilogy, but I was a younger reader) and I don’t think it being a YA novel is a reason to dismiss that. I also found myself wondering if I was supposed to sympathize with a younger president Snow throughout. If the point was to change your opinion of him throughout the book, I think that could have been fleshed out better (see: comment on characters feeling one-dimensional). Once again, an interesting read for fans of the original series, but I’m not sure what Collins was trying to achieve here.
