I love a little mystery with my romance and Hideaway Cove (Windfall Island #2) by Anna Sullivan has just the mystery that I was looking for. Although I did not read the first book in the series (I am pretty sure that the mystery started there) the storyline was easy to pick HCoup and I was soon sucked in.

Jessi Randal is a single mother to a seven year old boy, she also helps run the charters business owned by her best friend, Maggie. She’s a strong, sweet and a very likeable character.

This was my first Anna Sullivan book. Not my typically genre, but I enjoyed it. The story moved along well and I really enjoyed the strong characters. The island life really comes through in the book, such a little hotbed of gossip! Great feel good story with some intrigue!

I really enjoyed this book. I really liked the main character, Jessi. She is a single mom raising her child on her own. She is strong and sweet - a very likeable character. Hold is so sexy and kind and I loved him. These two characters together were fantastic. There was a little mystery and a lot of romance in this book. I did not read the first book in this series but I liked this one so much I plan to go back and read it. This is the first book I have read by Anna Sullivan and I can't wait to read more.

This series has one story arc for the mystery but each book focuses on a new romance.

Quick summary
Jessi Randal wound up pregnant and alone at 16-years old when her boyfriend bailed. With her mother's help, she raised her son, Benji, now 7-years old, on her own and carved out a career for herself as the business manager for her friend Maggie's helicopter charter service on Windmill Island. She vowed to remain single and romance free until Benji was ready to leave home but sexy genealogist Holden (Hold) Abbott has thrown a huge wrench in that notion.

What I enjoyed
As Benji is the center of Jessi's world, he plays a prominent role in the story. Sometimes children make a love story awkward but Benji isn't precocious or overly cute. He's very much his mother and a reflection of her values. So, when you get Benji, you get Jessi. Hold is seriously charming and he needs all of it to crash through Jessi's barriers. He made the romance compelling, counter balancing her frequent resistance (which was often annoying). Things get extremely interesting when Benji's father returns after an eight-year absence.

The mystery
The search for Eugenia Stanhope's heir continues and pretty much languishes until nearly the end of the story. It was exciting and made up for things moving so slowly earlier. Plus, significant progress was made.

The bottom line
I liked this story much more than the first book though Jessi is yet another stubborn heroine when it comes to the romance. However, between Benji and Hold, the romance worked and the climax left me wanting more of this series. By the way, it really needs to be read in order.

"Hideaway Cove" takes place on Windfall Island. A small island off the coast of Maine which is inhabited by generation after generation of the same families who are well intertwined in each others lives. There is the romance -- between Jessica and Hold, which appears to be the central story. Jessica is a single mother of the adorable 7-year-old Benji. His father was her high school sweetheart, Lance, who left the island when she was 3 months pregnant and never returned. Since the day Lance left Windfall, Jessi has focused all her energy on Benji's happiness and well-being. Enter Hold, a handsome southern gentleman researching the Windfall residents' genealogy, when he becomes smitten with Jessi. BUT he is carrying some baggage that will impede this love story. But wait, there's more. There is also the mystery of the Stanton heir and the people who are trying to "eliminate" the heirs.

Generally speaking, this is a nice read. I really liked the characters, even the ones I did not think were necessary in this story (but now I realize were inserted for purposes of the next book). However, it was very ambitious, trying to tell maybe one too many stories, which to me, came at the price of the story's flow.

Last words: good, soapy, fun with characters you begin to care about and a town you become interested in knowing more about.
