My first reread of this series and it's so much fun to read them all as babies knowing what happens

(Reread/listened as French Audible book, about 10 years after first reading in English). First the Audiobook that I listened to was very good - the narrator gave a good performance. The book kind of drags in places, definitely not fast paced. The most annoying thing was how things were not explained properly. For example, when they decide that they need to go to the Eye of the World and meet the Green Man, there is no explanation of what these things are. This doesn't happen until later. Most of the people in the group wouldn't know what these are and should have asked for explanations. Instead, they only ask for explanations when they actually get there?

Still, I enjoyed relistening to this "classic" from my adolescence. We will see how far I get this time. I think that I got to the 5th or 6th book when originally reading.

Not sure if I’m up for reading the whole series. Had to put this one down a few times before finishing it because of how slow paced it is especially in the beginning. Also feel like not enough context/explanation is given for some things for the reader but curious enough to read the second book I think.

DNF (This is not really a review... sorry. But it's still an interesting thing to read in 2 mins...)

I remember I loaned this book from Lunds Stadsbibliotek (Lund's municipal library for those Swedish-illiterate people out there :p ). It had been looking at me with its glossy and richly deep-colored cover for months when I went there to study (I always never did, I always read random books from the fantasy section...). I had become a fantasy fan just a few years ago, and at that period in time, I had just realized how many fantasy books there where and how limited my reading experience was in that genre. Still, I had gone through many of the "classics" like Tolkien, Brooks, Forgotten Realms & Dragonlance, etc (and some not so classics but still great books!). So I decided excitedly that this huge series which most of my Swedish friends were so passionate about would be my next great read!

So I took it home, and I read the fist couple of chapters! Interesting stuff! It was making me curious but a few things were off... There were a lot of things that I could not understand, names, groups, lore. I was used to these things but here they just didn't click properly. At the same time, the plot and characters started to feel too "samey", too cliche (esp for fantasy). Something was off here...! I remember I stopped reading about 20% in. After a couple of weeks, I tried again. I stopped a few days later at less than 50%. Then month went by and I had to renew the loan.... which I did! And to no avail because I never tried again. I returned it two months afterwards, having read probably around half of the book, not caring at all about either the plot or the characters. When I dropped it at the collection point of the library, I felt that a huge weight had left me (literally and figuratively!). And that's the end of the story!

...or is it? Well, here's an appendix (since I'm writing this now). I mentioned just before about some things being familiar and some not clicking because they were not making sense. I think when we read, especially genre (and more specifically fantasy) literature we want things to be familiar in a degree. After all, we have expectations and that's the whole point. At the same time, most of the times we try something new, we also expect new experiences, new feelings, new ideas, surprises etc... But! we have expectations for those, which implies that we want some of those things in familiar forms or degrees. I'm sure you all understand me because you probably feel and think the same.

The problem I had with this book (as far as I can remember so back in the past - it's been 20 years gone), is that for me those things were oddly reversed, at least during the beginning of the book. What should be exciting and captivating was coming out dull and boring. It's all about personal perspective at the core of it.

But enough of my ramblings. As I write at the beginning, this is not a review. It's just my personal experience with "The Eye of the World" and my thoughts and feelings. Take it or leave it... and if you reached this part, then thank you for reading it!
