Dirk Pitt as head of NUMA seems to spend an awful lot of time out in the field doing things he use to do when he was employed to be out in the field. He doesn't like being behind the desk. He should be sacked for dereliction of duty and simply given his old job back. This time out he is trying to stop the hijacking of an oar carrier that fits into the pattern of other ships that had been hijacked. Of course it doesn't go according to plan and he and Al end up being held against their will. They have to fight to stay alive and ultimately foil the efforts of the evil deranged businessman.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, Summer and Dirk junior stubble on another angle to the same problem plaguing their father. If not for the bad men over reacting to an innocent situation they would never have been dragged into a fight to stop the secret plans of a new American submarine from reaching their final destination after being stolen.

It's all a rather formulaic read but it was still enjoyable and reminiscent of Pitt in his younger days when he was saving the world.

I love Dirk Pitt, and I am forever thankful to Clive Cussler for bringing him to life. <3

All Cussler books follow the same general plot line but I'm ok with that. I like to read about the awesome hero struggling against the ultimate bad guy. I like the explosives and fights and pretty girls and nautical mysteries. I like the wit and slight cheesiness and the happy endings.

(Of course, all that being said I don't think I'll ever branch out from Cussler. I'm happy with his writing and his series and I have no real desire to seek out another author in the same genre. At least not yet.)

A much more entertaining story and better developed characters grace this title than the previous entry by father/son Cussler. These Pitt novels are nowhere near as good as when Clive alone penned them, but the joint efforts between the two seem to be trending in the right direction. I was especially impressed with how the two Pitt children were developed in this one, and the implications of stolen technology from the U.S. really set up the background plot well.
