waido's review against another edition
5.0
Brilliant book about meaning, suffering, and human resiliency. The majority of the book discusses the author's experience in the Auschwitz concentration camps and his observations. In a place where humans are subjected to constant, unjust suffering, it is difficult to keep hope alive. However, the author made the case that the only way to navigate through that hell is to turn your focus to the internal world within you. Even when the external world is nothing but misery, one still has control over is their own mind. Humans are capable of withstanding suffering, as long as they see meaning in it.
There is also a short introduction to logotherapy, a field of therapy that the author pioneered himself. Logotherapy focuses on helping individuals find their own sense of meaning and leverage that to help them get over their problems. It is certainly an interesting concept, and the author did a great job of distilling the core principles down to concisely fit them in just around 1/4 of the book.
Overall, a very rich and fascinating book.
