Loved the way this book was written. Also a translated book always lends to it being special. Loved how the authors was researching her family and the dual timeline that took place. Stories like theirs should never be forgotten and the way the book was written as a refreshing perspective on yet “another” Holocaust story. But every person has a name and needs to be remembered.

I thought the political aspect was very interesting as even now today we see Palestine and Israel in the news.

There was content at the end of the book that I didn’t like and didn’t see the need for it to be added. It didn’t really lend to the story and could have been skipped.

What a unique book, unlike anything on the Holocaust I’ve read before. I would call this “autofiction” because it’s so closely based on the author’s life with some embellishments where history has no record. I just took off a few points because a couple chapters towards the end of the novel take an odd sexual turn that I’m not sure was entirely necessary.

Wow this was a good book! It was interesting to read this with the real world backdrop of the war happening in Gaza and Israel. I have an even deeper understanding of what Jewish people have experienced, what it was like in places like Paris before deportation began, how they believed that if they followed the rules they'd be okay. I see now why, at the end of the book, she says why they don't obey orders. Oh, and the reintroduction of "returnees" to France! I hadn't read about any of that before.
