While I did enjoy this book. I found it quite depressing. These girls have some of the worst luck. In this book we see the worst of people and some of the best in people. I would recommend reading it for yourself, as I did enjoy reading it as I do all of Chevy Stevens books, this one was just really depressing.

I don't give out 5 stars lightly. This book was so good. It's definitely one of my favorites now. It made me feel so many emotions along with the characters while following the darker and heavy story.

I really could not like these characters, especially Skylar.

Not for the already depressed.

A good story about people making bad-sometimes evil-choices consistently. It is believable enough, just don't think about the details too deeply and you'll have a fine read.

I don't know that I can say that I enjoyed this book, but it definitely kept me on edge and reading way too late into the night. At one point, I avoided reading it because I knew things were going to go bad and I was too scared to keep going. I finally gathered my courage a couple of hours later and read to the end. It's one of those stories where there isn't really any mystery, but the reader knows the whole time where the story is going and wants to scream 'DON'T DO IT!!' several times as it progresses. That makes it even more frightening to me. Then the ending came up and I just cried. It couldn't have ended any other way, really, but it was so sad. Such a good book!

THOSE GIRLS
Written by Chevy Stevens
2015, 384 pages
Genre: mystery, suspense, psychological, Canadian

Rating: ★★★

Dani, Courtney and Jess have had to take care of themselves since their mother passed away. They work hard at the ranch they rent their home from and keep each other going. Trying to stay out of their father's way, as he is often drunk and violent, they lose all they know when a violent episode gets out of hand leaving their father dead. They pack a few things and head west to Vancouver. On the way, the truck breaks down and their rescuers become their worst nightmare. Barely alive and scarred from the past few weeks the girls are taken in by a couple who help them get on their feet with new identities.

Eighteen years later, the past comes to haunt them.

I really enjoy Chevy Stevens books as her writing is raw and filled with suspense that keeps you up nights reading. While the rawness was evident in this book I found the suspense a bit lacking. I finished this book mostly because I like the author. The writing was well done but the story sometimes lagged and I didn't like the abrupt change from Jess to Skylar. I may be judging this novel a bit harder as I expected more from Stevens...and cannot wait for the next book! As always I love her setting of Vancouver and bringing it to life.
