On paper, this totally seemed like a book that I would adore. While the premise held great potential, the execution left much to be desired for ME specifically.

However, the world-building felt superficial, with science fiction elements lacking depth and complexity. Instead of being immersed in a rich and expansive universe, the story often relied on clichés and familiar tropes. This is a great entry point for those just venturing into science fiction – especially those interested in strong romance subplots without the slog of terms and world-building typical in the genre.

Amidst the backdrop of an intergalactic adventure/mystery, the story delves into the complexities of three characters grappling with the weight of familial and tribe expectations. I loved the three different points of view because they were so different. As they navigate their respective journeys, they confront assumptions and misunderstandings in their assorted relationships. One of the highlights of the book for me was the star-crossed romance, which provided some much-needed emotional depth.

Another of the standout elements of the book is the sentient ships and their deep bonds (or lack thereof) with their pilots. This aspect adds a fascinating layer, offering a glimpse into a world where technology and consciousness intertwine in unexpected ways. But despite that intriguing element and potential for growth, they felt flat and one-dimensional. The relationships lacked depth, and the interactions between the partners often felt forced or contrived. It would have been better as the main aspect of the story, in my humble opinion.

This one will appeal to readers new to the science fiction genre or those seeking a light and easy read. While the story may lack depth in certain areas, particularly in its world-building and character development, it nevertheless holds appeal for readers seeking an engaging and fast-paced story. However, for more seasoned sci-fi enthusiasts, the lack of depth and complexity may leave them longing for more substance.

Thanks to the author for the advanced copy. This review is based on a complimentary pre-released copy and it is voluntary.

Honestly, I really, REALLY enjoyed this book!

Quick synopsis: three unlikely allies find themselves (begrudgingly) working together to save their lives and the fragile alliance between their tribes.

This is a multi-POV, slow burn, steamy (but no open door or fade to black yet), sci-fi debut.

GO READ THIS!

I loved every minute. The beginning is a bit slower, emphasizing world-building, stage-setting, and relationship-building. As a reader, you're given a ton of information about this neat future society of humans but nothing feels like an info dump. All the information is expertly woven into the story, so you learn about this world and its people without feeling like you're in a lecture hall. Even the super technical and science information is written in an easy-to-understand way while maintaining its complex nature - a sign of excellent writing and understanding of the world and science involved!

And, once the action started, this book was non-stop moving. I easily blew through it in a few days. I CANNOT wait until the next book comes out and I'll be keeping an eye on this author!

Maybe I’m slightly biased as someone who grew up with all things sci-fi, which basically puts this book in my wheelhouse, but this debut is absolutely phenomenal! Please do not let the genre deter you from reading this. It is a wonderful gateway introduction to intergalactic sci-fi space adventure. As someone who has dipped more than a toe/foot/leg into the genre (and subgenres), it made me absolutely giddy as a reader.

One of my favorite things about Umbra is that it takes the complexities of a sci-fi/space opera and simplifies it to a degree that makes it easily digestible. So many aspects of sci-fi can make a story convoluted and hard to follow when you start to get into the mechanics of it, especially when there’s tech or sentient ships involved. But honestly it is told in such a way that is easy to follow while keeping the reader wholly engaged in the characters and the plot taking place. And my god, what a ride it is! The writing is so well done and really envelops you into the various worlds and environments.

In addition, the characters and their voices are strong! The story is written from 3 POV, which allows the reader to really get a feel for each individual and their makeup - like what drives them, why are they doing what they’re doing and how that affects the overall outcome. The development of various relationships and how events unfold felt truly organic in how it ultimately brings everyone together. And the integration of AI and the fully sentient ships just adds to the overall enjoyment of the story.

The mysteries and intrigue abound as our characters find themselves in a situation not of their own making but doing what needs to be done to circumvent catastrophe. I am so thrilled to have had the opportunity to ARC read this and I cannot wait to continue this trilogy!

This book had me at page one. Umbra stands out as a well developed, thoroughly enjoyable space opera with a cinematic feel that checks all the boxes of a good sci-fi. The moderate pace struck a nice cadence while allowing the depth required for a well thought out galactic world. The growth that happens for the characters was palpable. This book has heart and I'd recommend it to any reader looking for their next great adventure.

The World that unfolds is an interesting, diverse, politically rich intergalactic future. With a wide array of cultural influences, Toro backs her galaxy's diversity with a logical path and sound lore. It felt authentic and possible. The political landscape offered a good assortment of loyalists, rebels, scavengers, and explorers navigating ruling houses, crime syndicates, and alien threats.

The Character development was awesome. They all wove together quite naturally and I was left feeling connected. Even the most despicable among them was an awesome character, maybe my favorite. I think in some characters there's room to grow and in some ways it feels purposeful for the series. The relationships are done well, with a good assortment of camaraderie, tension and flames. The romance subplot was fantastic.

The Plot that was really engaging. As the cast of characters made their way towards each other, getting pulled from different angles and motives, I was thoroughly enticed by the mysteries that lay beyond the known galaxies and the troubles brewing within. I walked away with more theories than answers, yet so satisfied with the story that unfolded in their intertwined destinies and the logic and relationships left me wanting more.

That was the great part of the Writing. It was an easy read with strong prose that stayed out of its own way. Toro struck a cinematic feel without getting too in the weeds. It gave me hints of BSG, Star Wars, and Firefly. The story let me breathe in the world and become totally invested, and I was left delightfully entertained.

I loved this book! It has Star Trek vibes but I liked how there were bonds between the person and their ship as if it's a real person. So original and interesting to me!

There are complicated family relationships which I think everyone can relate to. I totally understand not wanting to disappoint your parents and u really related to that.

I honestly can't wait for book 2! Great job and congratulations Amber Toro!

Thank you to Amber Toro for the opportunity to read this book as an arc before its release.
As an avid Science Fiction fan for my entire life, my bar for science fiction is fairly high.
Umbra, meet and far surpassed my exceptions. I recently finished watching The Expanse and this book hit that same note for me. The adventures that the crew goes on really had me on the edge of my seat. No need to worry if you haven’t read or are not a seasoned sci-fi reader, this book is an easy read to get into.

Amber has a prose that draws you in and quite literally doesn’t let up until the very end.
I found myself not being able to put this book down. I believe I read this arc in less that four days.
As a mood reader, it’s difficult to stick to one book but this had me HOOKED! It has something for everyone: sentient ship, banter, romance sub plot, adventures, action, and parent child relationship strain. Literally I found myself falling in love with every aspect of this book.

The action scenes! I need to take a moment and talk about how enthralling Amber’s writing is. I found myself gasping out loud and even physically cringing at some of the outcomes of those scenes. I could go on about how well the multiple POV’s were written. I connected with each of our main characters: Hinata, Feyja and Skyla were all so different but cohesive. They all brought a new perspective to the table. Skyla is our FMC and by the end of the book I understood her journey. She really tore at my heart strings, especially that ending! The romance sub plot is a slow burn and I am OBSESSED with it. Give me all the pinning, it was everything.
Not me about to cry while also NEEDING more! I cannot wait until book two comes out! I need it EXPEDITIOUSLY.

So so so so goooooood!!!!

This story follows three people:

Skyla, who used to be a Captain, but left before graduating to become an admiral and has since been missing for three years. Until she gently crash lands at an outpost.

Hinata, a captain who has been in exile at an outpost for the last three years per his mother’s demand due to failing the admiral exam. His outpost is the lucky outpost where Skyla crashes 😏

Freyja, who has now become admiral, but is tasked by the Empress to take on secret missions while also being an admiral for the galaxy’s government, and is trying to understand what the Empress’ endgame is.

I’ve been wanting to read scifi more often, and when it’s also a slow burn romance, sign me up!

This was such a fun read! This definitely reminded me of Red Rising, especially with the epic battle scene that occurs in here. The way this book is written, I felt like I was there experiencing what the characters were experiencing.

The world seems vast, and I’m hoping we get more detail as the series progresses, but what I’ve read so far makes it unique and I’m curious to know more about the tribes, and how things are run. We get glimpses, but this first book I think focused mainly on introducing our main protagonists and their stories.

There’s also definitely something more going on as the story progresses and you’re trying to figure that out while also not getting distracted by the characters and their stories 😂 And the action in here is top notch!

We really get to know the main characters in this first book. Skyla is the fierce ex-captain who has a very close relationship with her sentient ship and she’s the sunshine to Hinata’s grumpiness 😂

Hinata was my favorite. I always love the broody grumpy male MCs, and he was definitely that, especially with his stoicism and refusal to break rules….except when it comes to a certain captain 😏

Freyja, I was frustrated with at first. She’s ambitious and has QUITE the temper, and I admit, I wasn’t a fan of her at first, but as you get to know her, her past and her plight, you come to understand her position and can’t help but root for her and hope things go well for her.

Now, the romance. I’m always a sucker for a good slow burn, tension-filled romance, and this one delivered. The entire time you’re just wondering “will they, won’t they”, and it drove me nuts! It’s so worth the wait, until it’s ripped away from you again 😂 Let’s just say I can hardly wait for the next book!

Oh! And another unique thing about this series are the sentient ships! I loved the idea of connecting with a ship like that! They could be sassy, and show emotion, even though they’re AI, but they develop emotion the longer they’re connected with their human. It’s just a lovely and unique aspect of this world!

If you need a scifi with a lovely slow burn romance, you should definitely check this one out!

I received a free digital copy to read. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Thank you author Amber Toro for the ARC of this book! It reminded me why I love sci-fi!

A compelling science fiction novel with elements reminiscent of The Expanse, Battlestar Galatica, and Star Wars. The story features political intrigue, human expansion in space, sentient starships, and engaging battle scenes. The evolving relationship between characters Skyla and Hinata, and the intriguing backstory of Freyja, add depth to the narrative. The book has rekindled my passion for the science fiction genre, and I’m highly anticipating future works from Amber Toro.
