This is story is about a Senegalese man who is fighting in World War 1 for France. He starts descending into madness after his childhood best friend dies on the front.
This book showed the spiral of madness really well, but it was very gruesome and the end was pretty derogatory towards women (trigger warning for SA). Not my cup of tea overall.

This book is unique, I'm honestly unsure how I feel about it.
I think it portrays the spiral into madness very well, the story is gripping and interesting, the subject of colonialism in war is important and needs to be talked about more often, and the book makes some philosophical points that felt genuine and refreshing.
But even though it was short, I found that I had to put it down because of it's repetition. If I have to read "God's truth" one more time...
The last few chapters were confusing, but the story was really good. The writing in general wasn't very descriptive, I had difficulty painting a clear picture in my head, which I found a bit off-putting.
