“Of all the animals that travelled the long road through the ages with us, dogs have always walked closest.”

Animals are something I am deeply passionate about, especially dogs. So if someone stole my dog, you better believe I would do everything in my power to get her back. In this, at least, I relate to Griz, the main character in A Boy And His Dog At The End Of The World.
We follow our main character in their journey to retrieve their stolen dog, but we find so much more than that along the way. The loyalty of a pet, the bond of friendship but also survival, family, and a world that is so close, yet beyond understanding. This book is a deep and striking character portrait that says so much more than just the words on the page. It’s a book that I think will haunt me for a long time.

Outstanding! A post apocalyptic story with a very human centre. I was gripped from page 1 and greedily devoured every word - not one was skim read or deemed unnecessary.
This book is truly deserving of its 5 stars, to the extent that it has changed how I will rate future books. I have rated previous books with 5 stars but now realise that most of them don't come close to this one - certainly none have bettered it - and I almost feel as if I should return to them just to amend their ratings. But no, they were rated without this book as a comparison. Future books will have a higher standard to which to attain. So far, this is one of the best books I have ever read!

A Boy and his Dog at the End of the World is a post apocalyptic story following a young boy who is searching for his companion which was taken from him. Griz lives on a secluded island with his family where they take pride in safety and precaution to continue survival. Yet when a strange man sails onto their homeland, Griz is mot sure if he is to he trusted. When Griz awakes the next morning to discover that his dog is missing along with the traveling man, Griz sets out on a journey with only one goal: to return home with his best friend.

This book was just middle of the road for me. I think it had a compelling narrator, Griz. & I enjoyed how its told all in first person and through personal thoughts shared from his journal. All the suspense and ‘thrilling’ aspects of the story are around the safety/well being of the dogs. Im usually not one who can handle animal abuse but this is told almost lighthearted where its not graphic yet still has an impactful. Its an adventure/quest based story yet pretty slow and uneventful. There are little pockets of action sprinkled throughout but mostly you’re are feeling isolation and loneliness radiating through our narrator.
