Best one of the series I read yet. So much happened in this book, no huge battles but still so damn eventful. Little losses and victories here and there that made me laugh or worry. The whole final event had me on my toes. The squad has such a funny and heartfelt dynamic, such a fun perspective to read from! Can’t wait to start the next one. Maybe I won’t wait as long this time to pick it up.

Sprinted through the second half of this book! It was so good! I think Brent Weeks really stepped it up in his writing with this book. I also began to see some clear Christian themes and ideas presented in this book but done in a very tasteful way!

What. The. Hell. Brent. What. The. Hell.

How? How could you mash up my poor brain like that? Why did you have to shred my poor heart? Why?

Clocking in at 800+ pages, I'm actually rather glad I read it on Kindle. Thankfully the sheer weight of the book translated completely into the weight of the storytelling. I've been impressed by Weeks before, his deft way of weaving powerful characters into soul-searing commentary on the human experience is an enviable skill he possesses in buckets. I'd be envious were I not so entranced. There are only a couple of fiction authors I've actually wanted to highlight, with this book Weeks put himself into that list. The growth of Gavin continues, facing his internal and created demons, right up to when the reader is gasping out "no, you won't!" and then catching breath. The political machinations of the White the Guile are nothing short of brilliantly imagined, with an appreciation to human complexity rather than relying on people doing good and bad and hoping that counts as struggle. Then there's Kip, who's internalized self-story is as much a character as he himself is, often running parallel even as he realizes it's no longer valid. We see a boy become a man, with all the difficulty and doubt that such can bring. There is so much more to be done and I'd be annoyed at waiting did I not already have so much to savor.
