for whatever reason, my brain could not properly process this book as an audiobook. no matter how many time i went back over sections, i never had any idea what was happening during the prose chapters. likely that was because the stories were so dialogue heavy, so it was hard to differentiate between characters and understand the flow of the conversation without seeing it on the page.

the poetry was beautiful, the stories (from what i could understand) were violent and disturbing. i feel like that was likely the point of them, but i’m genuinely not sure.

Incredible writing... from a man who led an interesting life. Harlem Renaissance classic right here.

One of those books that can be classified as nothing other than beautiful. Difficult, slow, definitely not a light read, but beautiful.

An important yet tedious book

This is a seminal work but not a well written or interesting one, at least not to me. It is more poetry --and not very good poetry -- than prose. And the work is disconnected and cobbled together too. Much of this edition is not in fact the short compilation of Toomer work that is Cane, but a literary deconstruction of Toomer life and racial identity.
