By the last chapter I was so mad at her and felt so queer-baited that I said I've read enough to write my paper on it and didn't read the final chapter. I have no regrets about it.

It was slow to start... Like probably 40-50% was a slog... But then things got interesting and I devoured the last 60% holy smokes. So many thoughts. First, master and yes sir? Mmkay Jane was a sub obv. She only knew control in her whole life. She gets money and freedom and independence and immediately falls into another man's clutches.

I was actually rooting for her to somehow break out. Break free. I felt her aimless and wandering spirit. Even money didn't make her happy. But Im sad that "love" was the answer especially since Rochester got the color of her eyes wrong.

Was this romantic? Yes. Very. But in domineering and controlling way that young girls romantacize as strength. Jane had so much conviction to walk away from Rochester after he lied to her and almost ruined her life. Then again when st John tried to trap her. I wish she'd taken that and idk started a school for girls and been headmistress and found happiness and fulfillment in that. I want her to find love but not in a man that tried to ruin her. I get it he lost his eye and hand so that means he's redeemed his ways? But he didn't grovel enough. Where is the grovel?

I last read this as a sophomore in high school--26 years ago--and I only remembered the things everyone knows about the book. I have trouble with reading books from this era, however, as I spend all my time trying to "find the sentence" amid all the clauses, and I can rarely get into the story. Audiobook solved this for me, having done the work already! In all, I enjoyed this book, and I really enjoyed Jane, with her independent streak. Some of the language of the book was really beautiful.
