I kept getting "The Look" from my non-reading boyfriend as I read this novel, largely because I spent 90% of it gasping, 'ewwing', muttering to myself and generally just being a little too involved.
"The Look" can be translated as, "I don't know why you are reacting in such a way to made up stories printed on some dead tree..." and no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't get him to understand the complete turmoil, and the all-consuming need to get to the end of this novel.

'One by One' was pretty much the most gruesome novel that I have ever read with more blood, guts and gore than an abattoir. But this wasn't the worst part. Oh no. I can put up with gore, it was just the merciless, senseless and supposedly random nature of his selections. the precision and dedication to murdering and torturing these people in the most-feared methods of killing. The lack of trust that you had as a reader in the public to save people...
I was almost too scared to bathroom break in case I was abducted and tortured on my way back down. Not only because I would be killed in the most painful way imaginable but because I'd never get to the end of this un-put-downable novel.

I love Robert Hunter as a character. Hunter is the ever-calm genius but without any of the oddities or ego that similar fictional characters have. My comparison would be Sherlock Holmes, who is a genius but odd.

I also very much love that this is an on-going series with familiar characters and yet each novel is like an entirely new and unaccompanied book. I have also been reading the Roy Grace series by Peter James and each new addition is so entirely bogged down with events from past books that I lose interest. Chris Carter always offers a refreshing installment but retaining the best aspects of previous novels, such as the by-play of characters and developing relationships.

I absolutely loved this book and would recommend to Chris Carter fans or just to anyone who loves a good Crime novel.

Overview: Here I am with another Chris Carter review for all your dark thriller lovers. And yes. It's 5 stars. Can this guy even write a bad book? This book kicks off the action from the very first page. And oh my goodness...the gore

I can't rate this one. Though I really enjoyed it, there was a likeness to a film that came out five years before this was published that was entirely unignorable. If I hadn't seen that film, I'd have likely given this book 5 stars but the plot lines were almost identical and obviously the film came first.
