Sooooooooo good. Unique setting, fast/well-paced plot, great character development. Best fantasy I've read in awhile.

Chalk full of bad ass girl pirates and their mission in the sea to thwart a bigger enemy. I fell in love with the characters immediately and really connected to them. The word itself was pretty interesting because it’s a mix of advanced tech (solar powered sails and self-mending mirrors) and old word pirate vibes. Can’t wait for the sequel!

Whipped through this whole book in <8 hours.

From the beginning to the end it was a wild roller coaster ride packed to the brim with action, adventure, blood, fighting, swords, friendship and definitely made it to the top 10 list of my favourite books read in 2019. I enjoyed the intense pace of the book, i thought the fact that it never slowed down made it something so utterly spellbinding and amazing to read.

What i truly loved about this novel was the whole crew of girls. I grew up looking at pirates as predominantly male characters (e.g. Jack Sparrow, Captain James Hook etc.) and this book really brought a little girl's fantasy to life: powerful young ladies with steel in their hands and blood on their faces. This book really did not cut any corners - i did not see weak little babies crying for their mothers. i saw strong young girls who fought with no mercy. i saw strong young girls who killed men with the same nimble fingers they used to braid their hair. i saw strong young girls who were loyal, fearless and tough.

and for that, i am so happy.

i fell in love with the characters one by one, slowly and surely. all of them were so wildly different, and i loved them all with my whole heart. i must say though, Pisces was utterly frustrating. she was the 2nd main character in the novel, and during the whole course of the novel i felt my frustration towards her growing and growing and growing. homegirl chose dick over her sisters. she chose a boi over her galpals pirate gang.

along those lines, i think the main character is honestly such a disappointment. it's because of the 2 of these dumbass characters that i did not give Seafire the 5/5 stars it deserved. I honestly liked her so much in the first 100 pages, but she went on a downward spiral that i could not accept and tolerate. i hated how she was self centered, how she expected loyalty but never returned the trust, how she was obstinate and arrogant and rude and most importantly i hated how she could not trust people who had proven themselves worthy. it seemed like she was begging for a riot to start within the crew, and when she abandoned them in the end, it felt good because i was DONE with the shit she put her friends through.

i'm eagerly awaiting the second book! hopefully our piece of shit main character will get what's coming to her and WAKE UP, either that, or she dies. we don't need backstabbing cowards who abandon ship.

4 stars.

The first book I've finished in nearly half a year, and my first read of 2019. I'm more than satisfied.

FYI
THIS IS JUST GOING TO BE ONE LARGE SPOILER-Y 'REVIEW'.

Spoiler
I really liked this book. There were a few slow bits here and there, but mostly it was really fun. I enjoy books set at sea, for some reason, and that has all the ship-speak, so this was right up my alley.

I loved all the characters, and especially their relationships with each other.

My favourite thing is that there was no focus on any romance whatsoever, even if there was a kiss here and there. And the fact that it wasn't our main character that was the defending-and-believing-in-the-enemy-we've-captured. Instead she was the one who had to be convinced, and we saw that through her inner monologue.

The plot itself was new and refreshing, as was the world. It's like this was a historical fiction meets steampunk meets fantasy? Whatever the mix, I loved it.

All in all it was a great book to start my year with, and I'll definitely be picking up the next instalment.

“Never underestimate the girls of this world.”

*NO SPOILERS*

I read the audiobook for this and it was AMAZING! The wonderful, lovely Rebecca Soler did the narration and was great as always! She's one of my favorite narrators and you won't be disappointed with the audio for this book!

Wow, yeah this book got me into pirate books. The writing is fun and the style just fits for a pirate book, ya know? It's daring and fast and just so damn effective for the story she was trying to tell.

I loved the characters. They have their faults, but they are relatable and I understood their motivations. They can be frustrating (and MAN sometimes we just need a little communication!) but I loved them all. I really think Natalie C Parker did an amazing job making this book fun but suspenseful. There were real stakes and I felt like I could tell that not all the characters I loved were going to make it (It is pretty unrealistic for the lovely badass lady pirates to win all the time, unfortunately).

I'm going to take a second and gush over the female sisterhood and companionship. The dynamic and family that was demonstrated in this book was just wonderful. It is so nice to see so many women in a book working together to GET. SHIT. DONE. I just really enjoyed the crew, okay?

Overall, this was a fun and quick read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I really recommend it!

I did expect something different from this book. Maybe a happy crew with some problems or else... but the background is so DARK.

Also I didn't like the main character, and the writing was more like a descrptive summary than a story? I didn't feel anything for the characters :(
