I feel bad for giving it such a low rating, but the story was soooo drawn out. In terms of a slave narrative I think it served its purpose in shining light on the atrocities of slavery. In terms of a memoir, it was very redundant and too expanse for my liking. Overall, It was okay and so two stars I give it.

an astounding story that chills in the modern day and really makes you wonder about its contemporary reception especially with how often the author addresses the reader as is typical of the style and times. i was gripped by the narrative as much as its larger importance. and the final chapter is stirring as the author grapples with freedom with nuance that feels almost modern.

I found it difficult to put this book down. Though it was written pre-Civil War, the writing is still easy to read and the story pulled me in. Yes, there is controversy surrounding this book. Regardless, I consider it an accurate depiction of the de-humanizing condition of slavery. The fact that this is from a woman's point of view, and even more interesting for me from a mother's point of view, made this a very important book. The detail surrounding every day life as well the emotions experienced were very powerful. This book, Jacob's story, will stay with me a long time.

This book painted a more vivid picture than any classroom lesson ever did on slavery. This book was a very emotional read, but I was so deeply involved in this book that I often found myself reading deep in to the night and through the day. It is a long, hard read, but I promise you will come out of it with a better understanding of what it meant to live as a slave.
