I am astounded at just how much I found myself loving this book, as I am not a large fan of the succeeding works of Austen. However, I could hardly put it down for more than a moment without being drawn back into the affairs of Evelina and Lord Orville.

There is an ease and wit to the reading that is unfamiliar to Austen or her contemporaries. The language wasn't self-consciously elegant, but instead allowed itself to just speak what it meant for the time it was in. Every character infused me. I loved the abrupt and sometimes cruel schemes and jokes of the Captain. I adored the maternal wit. Even the vast array of males displaying town social conduct for Evelina (Orville, Sir Clement, Villars) had me constantly turning page after page. I was hooked.

It has left me wondering why on earth it hasn't been made into a period drama and myself itching to adapt it into one.
