Mickey is a captivating character that I was rooting for, even as her decisions became more questionable and driven by trauma and addiction. McGinnis made a wise decision in including a mother in the medical field, and a step-mother who also knew the signs of addiction and dependency from personal experience.

I would recommend that teachers/classroom libraries have this book, but also need to be willing and available to unpack the decisions and options that Mickey faced. At times I hoped to hear from Josie or Luther, but Heroine is impactful regardless.

Along with her best friend Carolina, Mickey Catalan is one of the star players on her school's softball team. But when the two are in a car crash and Mickey suffers a horrific leg-injury, her status on the team is thrown into question. Determined to be physically fit when the softball season starts, she starts relying a little too much on the OxyContin she is prescribed. Soon Mickey is dependant on Oxy and will stop at nothing to get a fix..

A horrifying and heartbreaking story of an athlete's fall from grace into drug addiction, I couldn't put it down. It's hard to look away and you really find yourself willing Mickey to stop and get some help. I was shocked at how easy it was for Mickey to get addicted, and how she was able to keep up her normal life whilst having these constant thoughts in her head about how she needed relief.

Then the real hurt began when
Spoilershe starts using heroine. And then her friends die from overdoses and I just can't describe how terrifying this book was
.

From start to finish, I was on the edge of my seat. I love Mindy McGinnis' writing and I especially love how uncomfortable she makes me feel with her books!

I love this book. I feel it tell the story of a struggling addict, and how hard it is for them very well. It is dark and hard at moments to read but well worth it in the end. I would not recommend if you are a recovering addict your self or are in a dark place mentally. But I would recommend it if you want to get a better in sight to how a person getting into an addiction and what it's like for them.

Really excellent look at the progression from Oxy to harder drugs and the thoughts that accompany it.
