3.5 stars. Oozes cool and looks like the comic the movie creators later took inspiration from. Includes a good level of humour through Ross, although his stalling, dragged out story infuriated me almost as much as his boss. I didn't enjoy the Devil part of the story line - just got a bit too weird.

Really well written, really funny.

While I enjoy the narrative structure for its storytelling aspects, politically it bothers me to switch the focus SO MUCH to the white guy. I'm much more interested in what T'Challa is thinking. I'm hoping the series goes on to give more insight into his personality, because currently the Black Panther is kind of this mysterious blank slate.

I did appreciate the balance of adversaries- overall, race wasn't a determining factor in the lines between good and evil- personality and politics were.

This graphic novel made me nervous. I was nervous in the introduction about Christopher Priest's frankness about race and comics and nervous it was going to go off the rails in some but it didn't. While far from my favorite Black Panther story I respect the distance this book gave the title character. We often have a front row seat into the thoughts of heroes and judging this one by his actions alone was a welcome relief. My only major criticisms of the title are that I felt the story wrapped up entirely too quickly after what felt like four and a half issues of set up and world building and the character of Ross, based on Chandler from Friend, feels extraordinarily dated (this collection came out in 2001 and his jokes fall flat. That said my initial nervousness was gone by this volume's conclusion. Priest walks a tightrope and emerges on the other side of this volume the better for it.

Pros: full of witty humor, pop culture references, and amazing art by Joe Quesada and Mark Texeira. Also, I wasn't expecting the final twist, at all.

Cons: heavy-handed nonlinearity. It was slow-paced and even boring at times. The last issue really picked up, so here's hoping that [b:Black Panther: Enemy Of The State|680357|Black Panther Enemy Of The State (Black Panther)|Christopher J.
