I received access to this book from the author, which was awesome. I really wish I could rate this higher. It was parts really great and parts really bad.
So you have the main plot but it is so jumpy and inconsistent it's hard to tell what the heck is going on. I swear there's like a second plot but you don't have access to that. Like you're just stuck reading the journals of the people in it, so you only know what they know and how they experienced it so it's rather incoherent.
The characters are part really freaking awesome and part have no depth to them at all.
The ending comes upon you out of nowhere. Like it's been half hinted at all story, but not enough that it quite makes sense. The beginning is fairly slow and then the end is rather rushed.
There's quite a lack of detail about things that would be important. Sometimes things are stated as being something, but you don't know what said something even means.
I'm also rather annoyed with the fact that you don't even learn the main character's real name til at least half way through the book.
SpoilerShe's constantly called Watergirl. And then suddenly she gives you her name. And then what the heck is Flop's real name?

The words themselves are wonderful though. The dialogue is fantastic.
As much as a lot of the time I had no clue what was going on, I couldn't put this book down. So that's a huge plus.

It got better as the book went on. At first, I found the main character pretty annoying. But she really changed for the better (at least, in my opinion) as the book progressed.

Watergirl really put a unique spin on the
Spoilermermaid
genre for me. I loved it. We start at the beginning of the school year with Genevieve, a girl with a dangerous tendency to obsess over any boy she kisses. So she doesn't kiss anyone. She's only finally getting over the last kiss -- one that happened over 6 years ago. But now the brand new exchange student is showing an unfortunate interest in her.

Gen and her friends were brilliant characters. They really shown out in my mind, and I hated finishing the book, because I didn't want to leave them behind. The dance between Gen and her eventual love interest got me hooked right away. The dialogue, and Gen's narrator voice, are enchanting. Basically, I loved this story!

There were a couple drawbacks that prevented me from giving this book 5 stars, however much I loved it. First, the writing really could have used a little polishing. A couple passes with a good beta or editor would improve many of the bumpy spots in description and occasional confusing sentences. Second,
SpoilerI really wish there was more of a description of the differences between Sean and Oliver's peoples. Vashni, Soremni, Sirens? There's not much of an explanation of what they are and why they're at war? Some more details here would've been much appreciated.

Despite these points, I still have to recommend this book. The characters and the story are too good to pass up.
