Okay, so I read all the Artemis Fowl books at the start of this year and LOVED it. Like, I can't believe I hadn't even heard of them when they're THAT GOOD. I am sort of kicking myself for not having read them sooner.

My personal rating is 2 stars; I give 3 stars for the kiddos' sakes.
For the intended audience, I think it's a fairly decent series - a combination of fantasy and sci-fi with imaginative ideas. But it's not very challenging, and the plot becomes repetitive. I actually can't recall what happens from book to book without reading the descriptions because the plots didn't pull me in and I don't care about the characters too much. For kids, okay, but for adults, just read the first one and only continue beyond that if you need light reading where you get distracted often.

I absolutely loved this series! The snark, humour, madcap adventure, fun plot and entertaining characters makes this collection an unforgeable YA fantasy series.

Twelve-year-old Artemis Fowl is a millionaire, a genius—and, above all, a criminal mastermind. But even Artemis doesn't know what he's taken on when he kidnaps a fairy, Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon Unit. These aren't the fairies of bedtime stories—they're dangerous! Full of unexpected twists and turns, Artemis Fowl is a riveting, magical adventure.

This series is an amazingly enjoyable YA fantasy with memorable main characters and an assortment of entertaining side characters enjoyed by readers of all ages. There is never a dull moment in Artemis Fowl's world. Now If only Mr Colfer would write a bit more on this series? Just a little novella dedicated to each of the side characters and their untold stories.

This one always makes me smile!

This series is excellent. I would definitely suggest it to those young enough to appreciate it; I believe this series withstands the test of time only with a healthy dose of nostalgia and some quiet sighs at flatulent jokes. That being said, the characters are always wonderful, even with Butler's overly macho one-liners and Mulch's crass humor. How can anyone not fall in love with Artemis' cold demeanor, or Holly's stubborn fire? And Foaly, with his tin foil hat? The series blends magic and science in a way that *is* a little ridiculous...but the best kind. It is a very good transition series for those too old for How to Train Your Dragon (if such a thing is even possible) but too young to read the fourth and on books for Harry Potter. Eoin Colfer has other really good books as well (Airman is a personal favourite).
Speaking of personal favourites, the best books in the series, hands down, are 1, 3, and 6. And 8 if I'm hard pressed, though I think Colfer really didn't do Artemis' character enough justice, especially since he makes a point to talk about Fowl's exemplary piloting abilities in book 5. (mild spoiler, I apologise, but too mild for me to mark it a spoiler.)
