A very uncomplicated book with flat characters. There is a pretense of ethical philosophy regarding theft of property, but really it's all just explained away and theft is cool. The characters that die were always going to die, the ones that live were never in real danger, despite the stupendous blood loss and harm that comes to them.

The rampant cussing tries to cover up an uninteresting linguistic snack bar of oaths and curses. For really excellent fantasy oaths/curses, see Patrick Rothfus.

Don't even get me started on the narrative trash fire that are the Bonds Magi. They make absolutely no geopolitical or sociopolitical sense whatsoever. Their magic system is vague enough to avoid absurdity, but only barely.

In sum, no threat and no consequences...in a book all about threat and consequences.

This is a book written like a video game.

Fast-paced and entertaining. A bit more brutal than I was expecting. Fantastic dialogue. A bit slow at times, but overall a fun read.

I loved this book! Yes, it was long, but the plot was complex and the characters were well-drawn. My only quibble is that one of the female characters who could have been awesome was used as a plot device. As for the plot, it was sort of Ocean's 11 in a fantasy setting with a good deal of gory violence. Be advised, the Interludes that in the beginning of the book were about Locke and his friend Jean's past tend to be more about the people and history of the land of Camorr toward the end. Do not ignore these, they are still delightful or illuminating.

I have had this book for a long time, hesitant to read it as I was not sure it would live up to the hype. Well, it does. What a fantastic book! I loved the characters, the world building, and the story. Looking forward to reading the next two.

I was not sure about this in the beginning but the further it got the more I liked it. The story had me both laughing and crying.
