I’m a classicist, so this book was absolutely perfect for me. Beautifully written by someone who clearly knows the field intimately

A retelling of Daphne and Apollo set in academia. The nuances and imagery reinforce the characters origins and enhance the narrative overall. Formatting of dual POV that can take a minute to adjust too, but adds to the story overall. Not quite what I expected, and if you enjoyed this one you may also like The Cloisters. 3.5/5

Someone else said in their review "this is a book for a very specific audience" and I am that audience. I'm honestly not a huge fan of myth retellings, but the other aspects are what sold me on this book. I have to say the poetic aspects are well threaded through the entire story and culminate is a really satisfying way. Tessa and Chris are both compelling characters and the dynamic between them is totally engrossing. The classics plotline is very well executed, as are the interpersonal developments. I found myself audibly reacting more than once. The prose is wonderful, and very funny at parts, and the pacing is impressively moderated. If you like complicated flawed characters, messy relationships, Latin, slightly pathetic men, and ambitious women, read this book.
