My son quickly got hooked on this series and is energetically waiting for the seventh novel to be published. The series features three friends on a quest to save Perodia from darkness. Tag an owl, Skyla a squirrel, and Blaze the last Firehawk. While it entertains my son, to me it seems formulaic and the other characters lack depth.

One of my children (age 7) brought this home from the school library and told us that he liked reading now. That moment certainly earned this book all 5 stars from me.

A great quick pick for stronger elementary readers, as well as a high interest, action packed book for kids who are transitioning into longer chapter books.

Action and adventure are the name of the game for Tag, Skyla, and Blaze, as they seek the Ember Stone to defeat the evil Thorn and his orange eyed minions.

Be warned: The ending is a definite cliffhanger!

A little dark for a younger crowd (grade 1 and below) but for older kids great.

"In the enchanted land of Perodia, lies Valor Wood - a forest filled with magic and light. There, a wise old owl named Grey leads the Owls of Valor. These brave warriors protect the many creatures of the wood. But a darkness is spreading across Perodia, and the forest's magic and light are fading away..."

Think Guardians of Ga'Hoole and Erin Hunter, but for beginning readers, and you've got The Last Firehawk series. I think young readers will relate to Tag's frustration being small and feeling left out. But as the barn owl Tag soon discovers, it takes creatures of all sizes to stand against the evil vulture Thorn and his dark Shadow magic.

Discussion questions in the back. NOT a fan of the illustrations. There's probably no way to draw a squirrel or an owl in armor without it looking awkward, but still.

A perfect little book for younger kids hoping to dive into the world of fantasy! My daughter especially loves all of the animals!

Just part of my annual “pre-read books before giving as Christmas gifts.” Easy-to-read early chapter book full of adventure. Cliffhanger ending to lead in to rest of the series.
