Non-fiction books and autobiographies are far outside my zone of reading. I’ve never had an interest in them, and if I want to know about someone or something, I’d much prefer to open up an article and get a quick insight, as opposed to buckling down for a full novel’s worth of information.
I’m Glad My Mom Died is an absolute fantastic piece of writing. I don’t think I can add anything that hasn’t been already been said to the praise Jennette’s writing has received, but I am happy to echo it.
There are touching moments in this book, times where I laughed, gasped, gawked. This book also moved me to tears, being someone who has similar experiences to Jennette. Her writing is easy to follow and hard to put down, despite the discomfort and tense recollections she has endured and shared.
As Jennette herself wrote, I think it would be a discredit to her to say she was ‘brave’ for putting this material out into the world, but I firmly believe it was a wonderful thing to do and I’m glad we have it. Not only for her voice to be heard by many, but for also the frank and honest discussions about topics like familial abuse, romanticisation of the dead, and the nightmare of eating disorders.

I actually listened to the audio book of this, which isn’t something I normally do. But my mom and I had a long road trip planned and we’d both been wanting to read this book, so it seemed like the opportune time. I’m so glad the author did the audiobook as well. It definitely adds a level of intimacy to her experiences.
This book was pretty hard to listen to at times. Hearing the author describe such a toxic, abusive, and painful childhood (leading to adulthood) could be very disturbing. Her level of honesty about her life and her relationship with her mom is unmatched. She really goes all in. You want to somehow go back and steal away the little girl this was happening to, but of course, all we can do now is applaud the author for her commitment to healing herself and her trauma. And yet, somehow through all this, she manages to find humor in some of these darker moments.
I’m so sorry to anyone who experiences this kind of insidious abuse as a child. This would definitely be a triggering book if your experience mirrors hers in any way. But it also may be hopeful and inspiring as she was able to pull her way out slowly with a ton of hard work. Kudos for her bravery in sharing this deeply personal and complicated story with the world.
