Best memoir I ever read. I loved how it depicted the mom without making excuses for her, just because she was a mom, because moms can be abusers, too. It helped me a lot understanding my own circumstances.

Recommend listening to the audiobook since she reads it herself!
It’s really heartbreaking what she had to go through. But I’m glad that she is recovering and that sh had the strength and courage to write about what she has experienced.

She wanted this and I wanted her to have it. I wanted her to be happy, but now that I have it, I realize that she is happy and I'm not. Her happiness came with the cost of mine. I feel robbed and exploited. Sometimes I look at her and just hate her and then I hate myself for feeling that.

Well damn, I’m glad her mom died too! It was hard to read about every single adult in her life failing and/or exploiting her. Absolutely plowed through this book, both interesting and well-written. I wish she’d talked more about certain things, but I think some of that would have been impossible without compromising other people’s privacy. The only reason this isn’t 5 stars is that a chunk of the last third or so of this book just feels less polished than the rest. Definitely recommend.

I truly enjoyed this read & highly recommend the audiobook read by Jeanette herself. It gives an extra personalization to her already strong voice in her writing. The stories had me on the edge of my seat, for better or for worse. I found myself sitting in my car just to hear her out to the end of every one. The way she writes is truly eye-opening for those that haven't experienced the effects of CPTSD and is validating for those who have. This made me excited to see where McCurdy takes herself next with her newfound freedom. Smart, witty, and jaw-dropping. Loved it.
