Much of the intrigue and conflict of this book is about idealogical differences, theoretically and in practice. There is questions about the morality of their abilities. There’s questions about what access to/denial of access to knowledge means. Is it right or not for a privileged few to have access to certain types of knowledge over others. Things are not always binaries too. If this doesn’t sound appealing, no harm in skipping this.walkingcha0s's review against another edition

The exploration of magic felt so unique and interesting, I was impressed by how the author was able to balance so many specific types without it all becoming a muddled mess. I like how all the characters are flawed, they felt realistic (though very dramatic, but that's allowed as this is a book and not real life).
The twists were really good! Clues were artfully placed and the plot was very interesting, there were so many aspects that grew slowly in the background and then cropped up fully formed unexpectedly. I really loved the tone of the writing too, super easy to read and a satisfying and clever narration. Really good!!!! Finding a good uniqu fantasy series can be so difficult, I'm excited to make my way through these.
Moderate: Death, Sexual content, Violence, Murder, and Injury/Injury detail
Minor: Death of parent

Although it was a bit of a slog to begin with, the conclusion to the book definitely left nothing to be desired and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think it's overall done a good job of setting up the world and the sequel should (hopefully) have much better pacing.

I think the beginning was overall sort of slow and eventually picked up as things really started to happen. For me, there was a bit that could've been cut to make the story move along faster.
I like the characters a lot and generally like the premise. Probs one of my favorite dark academia books I've read so far (I've read a few and don't usually really like them that much with an exception or two). I will def continue the series because I'd like to know what happens to the characters. Honestly I don't think I would continue the series without audio assistance tho
