Brilliant book, loved the idea of meadians, and the setting despite being so small was interesting and a place I'd like to be. Loved the characters, and I'm excited to see more of them in the next two books.

thought the magic system and motivations of the characters were pretty interesting but the amount of sexuality made me uncomfortable (yes I know this is an adult book, it could have been violence ok?) and I didn't fully grasp the clear line of the plot

Really interesting concept and a diverse cast of characters. I do sort of wish I had read it as a physical or e-book the first time instead of listening to the audiobook. It was a bit tough for me to separate the characters at first since the way I listen to audiobooks while I'm doing other things I sometimes missed when a switch in character was announced. However, this is my personal experience and overall I really enjoyed the narration of this book.

The main plot does involve the six initiates protecting the society which does involve fairly detailed fighting with enemies who try to break in

this extends to torturing and killing some of those who made it through the wards.

one of the initiates had a sibling who died from an incurable terminal illness.

One of the characters had to watch his mom die in a mass shooting and relive that day over and over again. Additionally, the initiates realize that while there are six of them - they won't have to pick one of them to leave - they have to pick one of them to kill. There is some graphic sexual content in multiple instances. Some is a M/F pairing, the other instance is a M/F/F threesome.

This was an interesting concept but I do not feel that it was executed particularly well. The characters were difficult to attach myself to and often didn’t have much personality that I could connect with. The plot was very confusing and the magic system could have been developed.

The rating is mostly for what the book could be, I wouldn’t recommend it particularly and I doubt I’ll be continuing with this series.

I did a combo of listening to the audiobook (full cast, a narrator for each POV) and reading a physical copy, which was fantastic!

This is definitely a predominantly character-driven novel, but the characters are so interesting and lushly written that it often feels like so much is going on anyway (even though it isn't really).  It's one of those books where you feel like you can't really trust anyone as they all have ulterior motives (morally gray). It's very mysterious in their motives coming to light, and learning more about all the characters magical abilities.

I do really wonder though how much the next books will be character driven though because this book feels like a big set up for some major plot things to happen (ie: preventing the destruction of the universe?). SO I do kinda think/hope the storyline will move a bit more out of the character's heads just to really let this story unfold.

Also def everyone is queer, like there's no question in my mind that this will develop in the next books...

I cannot wait for the continuation of the series!

Many of the above moderate TW are described in past tense (fairly vaguely) as part of character's background stories.

I'm including the suicide TW as clearly others have noted it, but there is not actual suicide that happens... it like almost happens, and I can't really explain that further without a lengthy discussion. Incest or weird vibes from an older sibling to one of the MC (spoken about in past terms vaguely)

This scratched the dark academia itch for me. 6 people with various forms of magic ability all in the library of Alexandria for 1 year. Knowing that at the end of that time only five will be able to stay. Yet, what does that mean? How is it that one will leave?.... Some of them catch the deeper, and more volitile, dealings faster than others. The society has some deep and long kept secrets. 

These characters are all intensely written, and amazing flawed. I do wish there was more time spent on certain characters, and less time spent on side plots that in the end I felt were distracting more than helpful. I enjoyed this book and look forward to the sequel.
