hated it…
“You said Kim tried to kiss you."
"Yes, sir," Channon said wretchedly.
"Did she actually kiss you?"
Channon hesitated, but..."She did. I didn't kiss her back."
"I'm surprised you let her get close enough to try, after our chat the other day," Jack said, his voice very even, but Channon couldn't bear it.
"Are you angry with me, sir?" I know you are, just say it.
“He felt wretched, alternately wallowing in how stupid he'd already been and anxious about what was going to happen next. He was wet and cold and miserable, and Jack...Jack didn't even seem annoyed but he was disappointed and, oh, Channon hadn't ever wanted to disappoint him.”
…I think that says it all but just in case:
Channon is just so sweet, so shy, so naive, so unable to express his feelings…and Jack is…well. I hated Jack.Let me lay it out: Channon has been kissed without his permission. This is called assault. Sexual assault. This is a traumatising event. And Jack, who Channon puts all of his, misguided, in my opinion, trust in…proceeds to blame him. For “letting her get too close” This is called victim-blaming. All of this? Is disgusting. And triggering. For me, if it isn’t already obvious. And he doesn’t comfort him in any way…
He later tells Channon it wasn’t his fault that she kissed him, but when he says he doesn’t understand Jack just leaves it and…punishes him. And this was already after Channon has been made to believe Jack was disappointed and angry with him, while Jack leaves him alone to drown in self-loathing and hatred. So.
“You're worried I'm angry with you. Don't. I'm not. As I said, though perhaps you don't remember." He smiled a little, eyes cutting across to light on Channon. "Do you?”
“Yes, sir," Channon said, and he remembered but that didn't mean he believed it. "I remember you were disappointed."
"Underage drinking, Channon. Really? I shouldn't be surprised.”
…Here, Jack is disappointed with him for drinking. Did Channon know Jack would be disappointed if he drank? Was it discussed beforehand, a rule that Channon had agreed to? No. It was not. And yet, he tells him he intends to punish him for it. Where does that leave Channon? Hurt. Again. After Channon had already explained he didn’t know there would be vodka in the punch. Really? Really?
“Why did you drink so much?" "I didn't mean to, sir. It was just punch." But his friends always made it out of box wine, or whatever else someone could get their older brother to buy. This time? "I didn't know there was all that vodka in it." Until it was too late and he'd already made an ass of himself.”
“Maybe not getting drunk at a party with your ex-girlfriend when you haven't told anyone you're broken up," Jack said, dry as dust. Still, not angry. "You made some poor decisions. Do you think you deserve punishment for that?”
Change it to "RAPE OR SEXUAL ASSAULT" and this is the only acceptable answer
And the description of the book’s first line is “When Channon screws up, Jack's disappointment in him is awful.” But…I disagreed with that. Channon didn’t mean to get drunk, and Channon was IN ABSOLUTELY NO WAY responsible for what happened to him. So how did Channon screw up? Jack screwed up. He should have comforted and taken care of him instead of punishing.
…Anyways…this reads more like an essay. And i know perhaps this was just supposed to be light, fun reading. But I did have a lot of problems with this book. I read A collar for his brat before this and loved Channon so I thought I would try it, (even if I hated Jack by how Ewan had described their relationship. But what did I know? Perhaps he was biased.) Well, I tried it…and hated it. Maybe I’ll read more, maybe I won’t. But Channon just tries so hard to please Jack even if he has given him absolutely no reason to place his trust in him. And that hurts so…

Cawpile: 9.14 5*
I have boxes on my cawpile for ‘makes me fall in love with the characters’ and ‘makes me cry’.
This Vol was the first where I ticked both boxes.
A 5* well earned!
