I enjoyed the first book of this series, and this second one hasn't disappointed me! I stayed up way to late to finish it.
The story again focuses on the relationship between Roman, Jeff and Dare though this is really the story of Roman's rocky road! We take up about 3 months after the end of the first book, and all is not well.
Jeff is unhappy with the change in dynamics after Dare has joined him and Roman. And whilst a central character, we don't hear much from him due to his accident.
Dare is unhappy too, coming to terms with what he is and is not comfortable with after a sustained experience of the 24/7 life Jeff and Roman lead. He is also growing into himself after being repressed for most of his life and we see a more assured version, especially in crisis.
Roman is a bit oblivious, taking their 'ok's' at face value though his more human side does come out after Jeff's accident and his carefully constructed world is crumbling around him.
I enjoyed the journey that these characters went on in this book even though it wasn't all plain sailing. Have just seen that there is likely to be a third very soon  - yay!

I do enjoy SM Johnson's writing style, but I still cannot fathom why Jeff is the first-person POV when it's really Roman who is the MC. I would probably enjoy it far more if he were the "I" POV. In the first book, when Jeff randomly showed up, I was confused. In this one, he disappears for half the book, and is unconscious for part of it.

On the other hand, Roman's a fascinating character. I love his grandmother, and that he's strong enough to let go when the people he cares about need it. And that he's there to support Van as much as she needs in whatever way she needs.

I do wonder if these books could have just been one big book. It's a contiguous story. Otherwise, Dare didn't need to be in this book at all, as much as I liked him. Though I do wonder if he'll be back in the third book. Jason feels more like a substitute than anything else. I suppose I'll see at some point, but I doubt it will be any time soon, as I don't feel the itching need to buy it to find out.

Why can't I stop being curious about series that are clearly not for me? I still don't like Jeff....like at all. I don't see the great love between Roman and him. They come off very incompatible to me. I still wish Dare and Roman were the focus and main relationship. I'm annoyed that a gay man just randomly slept with a woman because plot, gotta impregnate the one uterus around I guess. I was sad about Roman's granny. But ugh I still wanna know how it all ends up. I hate myself sometimes.
