This would absolutely be a storytime choice for the older kids if the illustrations were larger!

I was curious about this author and illustrations after seeing the items created for the San Francisco Public Library summer reading program. These illustrations are best savored slowly, because there is so much going on. It naturally leads to having students share their ideas, and maybe even their true stories for homework not being done. (I had a doozy myself in college that the professor accepted! It was true, but...)

I think this book would be fun to use as a writing activity. Have students write their own outlandish excuses as to why they don't have their homework done, then compare them to the excuses in the book. Some excuses are ok. Some excuses or the illustrations of the excuses were strange. Not sure if it was the French to English translation. But some excuses were fantastic "some cough medicine that my doctor prescribed had a strange effect on me." And "my brother had his little problem again," shown with the illustration of the brother turning into this strange looking creature. A fun book, but a little strange.

I can see ways I'd use this as a text to inspire writing in my classroom. In fact, I did! After using this with students, I upped my star rating because of how much they enjoyed it. My 7th & 8th graders ranked this in their Top Ten of picture books used in the school year when we read aloud a picture book every day. When I had them do their own version of this story, they created some of the most fun student writing I've ever read.

This one was a great deal of fun! The excuses were wonderfully over-the-top and the art adds a lot to it as well. The ending in particular made me laugh. Definitely recommend!
