I really enjoyed the book and its narrators !
The story was interesting and kept me going and I said that as someone who isn't a fan of paranormal. The characters were loveable and interesting but there wasn't a lot development expect for Anora (not too much compared to other).
Some plot twists were very predictable but still I enjoyed them because it was well executed and led to other twists.
Overall it was a really good and I would read the next one

I really wanted to get into this book and it’s fantasy but I struggled. I was so confused for the first part of the book and felt like I was missing some of the basis. Then all of a sudden it clicked and I got into it. I do feel like the ending came up fast and I would love a book 2 to find out what happens and to get more information about Anora’s poppa!

𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝘀: fantasy, friends to lovers

𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀: contains scenes that depict suicide

I enjoyed the book, but relationship between Anora and Shy is almost similar to that of King of Battle and Blood.

Anora is still grieving her grandpa and dealing with the mother who is still suffering. She can see ghosts, but can't explain where she gets this power from. With the help of the friends she made at the new school, Anora discovered the truth that everyone was looking for.

Thank you NetGalley, Sourcebooks Bloom Books and Scarlett St Claire for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

When Stars Come Out is Scarlett's baby book that she just revamped and I loved it! It is upper YA, and I say upper mainly because of the serious topics discussed, such as death/suicide. Please read her trigger warnings, she does list chapters. I read the arc and while serious topics are talked about I really loved it! Anora is very genuine, strong MC with a huge secret and just wants to be a normal high school student. I don't want to spoil anything for you because not knowing was part of what I loved about this one. It is dual POV, contemporary setting, and a mythology retelling. I would say the romantic part of the story is there but it is not in the forefront of the story. Overall it was very wholesome and I am excited for people to dive into this!!!

Headlines:
Don't be fooled by that pretty cover
Scary stuff within
Loose Eurydice/Orpheus retelling

This book was completely not what I expected. That cover made me think light ya fantasy when what is inside is dark, somewhat scary and utterly creepy in parts. If you look back at its previous cover, that definitely gives you more of a feel of what is inside this book.

The above said, I did find myself interested in the word of shifting ravens, death speakers and greek mythology links to Charon, hell hounds and all this in a high school context. Anora was a very interesting character, misunderstood, called crazy and she really had no one on her side. I hated her mum, there was some subtle abuse going on that didn't get tied up so I hope that's dealt with in the second book.

When I first met Shy (that full name...), I was a little leery of his interest. The Eurydice element to the story saved my investment, I liked how that part was rolled out and how they connected but I did want to see more depth with these two though. The whole organisation that Shy and others belonged to was suspect and Roth could be friend or foe; I suspect foe.

The plot was dark, really scary for brief moments and it did feel like it had horror elements. Nevertheless, I made it through and I would definitely like to see where the next book goes.

Thanks to Bloom Books for the eARC.

When Anora is uprooted from New York to Oklahoma to escape a dangerous secret, she hopes to find a fresh start at Nacoma Knights Academy. Instead, she finds ghosts of suicide victims, online bullying through an anonymous app, and more secrets that threaten to overwhelm her and the new friends she tries desperately to fit in with. Past lives, trapped souls and forbidden love flavor this YA novel from best selling author Scarlett St. Clair, and while it lacks the language and content of her adult novels, it will still keep you flipping through chapters to find out more about the mythos of this dark world!
