Thoroughly disappointed, especially considering all the hype that surrounded this novel. Feels as though you had to be there to get it. Natsume Sōseki is witty and observant of course but it reads like the ramblings of a self important old man.

Really amusing and interesting insight to the lives of man and how our odd habits could be seen from an outside source. Incredibly dense, but ultimately enjoyable with a rather disappointing ending.

It’s a great book, just slow and anticlimactic. After finishing the first volume I just didn’t feel like I needed to read anymore, which makes sense since the author didn’t originally plan on writing more. Maybe one day I’ll pick it back up.

Natsume Soseki's titular cat writes about his observations of the humans around him with a dry wit. A satirical look at upper-middle class intellectuals at the turn of the 20th century, the cat watches while people try to navigate the increasing influence that western culture has upon their lives. Originally intended as a short story and then turned into an eleven-part serial, the later eight sections are better than the first three.
