I was expecting a sweet, historical romance, but got a horror novel instead. Horror novels are not my thing and this one was definitely creepy. It wasnโ€™t necessarily a bad horror novel, but the advertising did not communicate the fact that it was a horror novel. It was a bit predictable and clichรฉ though.
Songs:
  • Chelsea by Phoebe Bridgers- this one doesnโ€™t fit very well, but I got the same vibes from this song and this book
  • august by Taylor Swift- for Rebecca and Sam
  • Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson- for Ellerie

Similar reads:
  • The Monster in the Hollows by Andrew Peterson- if you want a younger, cleaner, and more christian version of this book then The Monster in the Hollows is the book for you!
  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J. K. R**ling (god I hate to write her name)- I was reminded of Ginnyโ€™s storyline while reading this book

Life for Ellerie in isolated Amity Falls, is pretty uneventful. It's surrounded by an impenetrable forest, and life has a predictable sameness to it. Until a bunch of townsfolk go missing on a trip to fetch supplies, sending waves of unease, and betrayal through the whole town.

I really bloody enjoyed this book, and bloody is the perfect way to describe it. For a YA horror I was pleasantly surprised at how gross this was, I'm talking skin hanging off, skulls being crushed,  freaky hybrid animal creatures and a whole load of blood ๐Ÿคฃ

Ellerie Downing was just the kind of character I love to root for; she was so caring, and strong. She goes through hell and back, but still has the kindest heart. I even enjoyed her romantic arc, which isn't something I say often when it comes to YA. It felt believable, plus I also have a soft spot for weird men that live in the woods ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

If you like your horror gory and supernatural with great characters, you need to add this to your spooky season TBR. Don't let the page count of just under 500 pages put you off, there isn't a dull moment in this book. The way Craig builds on the sense of unease and isolation throughout Small Favors was just so fun to read.

I absolutely adore this book! Once I picked it up, I could not put it down. I would have given it 5 stars however the cast was not very diverse and I if that was included the book would be even better than it already is. Over all loved the characters and I was really invested in their growth.

Erin does it again! A really creepy read that kept me wondering. I did figure some things out early -- just because I know the fairy tale this is based on -- but I kept wondering where it was going to go. Really enjoyed this read!

When I finished a House of Salt and Sorrows, I was angry. After finishing Small Favors, Iโ€™m just sad. Because this book had so much potential, but just with Craigโ€™s last book, it tries to be too many things at once while not really excelling at any one of them.

I donโ€™t mind a slow moving plot, but there better be a point to it. The creatures were built up to be more threatening than they really were. Honestly I think I would have enjoyed the story more if the supernatural was taken out of it and this was just about a village full of people turning against each other.

The main character had no personality. Iโ€™m told that characters are a certain way. โ€œHe tells me everything, sheโ€™s my best friendโ€, but I see no evidence of this at all? Kind of hard to believe Samโ€™s a good person and brother when heโ€™s a dick right from the beginning.

The love interest. Sigh. I feel like I could replace him with Cassius from HoSaS and there would be absolutely no difference at all. And come on. He was one part of the mystery that wasnโ€™t a mystery at all. No personality, insta love by the gallon, main character swooning over him literally from the first moment. In a book this slow, there was time to build a relationship between Ellerie and Whitaker. But no. We couldnโ€™t possible have that.

The ending was anticlimactic and even more boring than the last novel. Craigโ€™s writing style is beautiful and I was really hoping Small Favors would win me over after the disaster ending of HoSaS. But I think this will be the last book I read from her.
