conflicting thoughts on this one. what began as a delightfully creepy book ended up becoming extremely annoying. i found the romance to be so laughably bad and this book is far too long. i love long books and slow burn plots but this does not have a good payoff to warrant being almost 500 pages. the conclusion was too fast and crammed into the last 50 pages. i could see this being 350 pages or less and it would have had the same effect. i will say, i loved the atmosphere. it was quite eerie and had some genuinely creepy scenes but the answers you get make everything in hindsight not very creepy. just disappointed overall. this started so good and i loved the small town politics being explored but it just became too outlandish for me personally.

Super creepy! Answers two questions: what’s really in the woods, and was the trouble brought in or already there.
Only four stars because I still had questions at the end—if there’s going to be a second book, okay then.
If there’s not—not cool Erin Craig. Not cool at all.

A new all time favorite! From page one I was in love with this world, story, and characters. Craig has a way of weaving stories that feel so real like they are fairytales passed down through the ages. I adore her writing and the way she crafts her atmospheres.

i really love Craig’s writing style - murder, intrigue, incredible protagonists, unexpected antagonists, and a lore so convincing I’d believe it to be true any day (also theres deeper themes in this book than you’d imagine). i couldn’t put the book down!

Erin A. Craig is a MASTER at suspense. I couldn't put this down until I uncovered what secrets lurked in the woods and what fate awaited Amity Falls.
A loosely-inspired Rumpelstiltskin retelling, Small Favors is a dark mystery that unfolds in the town of Amity Falls. We follow Ellerie and the Downing family as things begin to take a turn for the worse. Failed supply runs, weird and mutated animal births, crop failure, and mistrust begin to spread through the town like a plague. When winter inches closer, the town must hunker down and try to survive with limited rations as things begin to get restless and the air begins to feel angry.
The magic is ancient and mysterious, the people removed yet present. I really like the way the story is set in a settlement of some kind yet still in present-day (or some semblance of it.) I also enjoyed a complicated romance you can't help but root for, despite the mystery and mistrust that surrounds the character and his intentions.
All in all, this is a dark, suspenseful, and near-gruesome story that will haunt you until you finish it.
I received a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review. Thank you so much to Penguin Random House for providing me with access!
