I loveeeee when authors do multiple different povs as an effect of what’s going on in the story. We got 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in this bad boy.

I’m jumping between 3.5-4 with this one.

I did not expect this book to be a tearjerker. I thought im in for a mystery kind of story but, plot twist, it was not. Either way, i enjoyed this read and it is a very good book.

Ps. Alice’s mom is the villain, itsg. Ben deserved better

I might be being unfair in my rating. There was little wrong with the book; in fact, there was plenty it did well. The writing was good (even if I did find the 1st/2nd/3rd person switching a little jarring), the story was structured to maintain interest and offer some mystery. The little snapshots of the characters lives worked well, and allowed most of them to get fleshed out naturally (the only character I didn't feel like I had a very good sense of by the end was, unfortunately, the main protagonist, maybe because we were too close inside her head). I just didn't feel like the book had earned its tear-jerky climax, so I felt like it had made me sad without doing enough else to be worth it.

Love Maggie O’Farrell’s writing, and this wasn’t an exception! Just a little dark and depression-y for my current mindset. I also got it from the library, and this is the kind of book I like to underline. I’m sure I’ll come back to it, so just a DNF for now!
