Baba Dunja embodies the spirit of Eastern Europe - just get on with it when things are tough, no need to waste precious time. I loved this book, I only wish there was more of it but I guess we got the gist of it which is what Baba Dunja would have liked.

3.5 stars. I enjoyed this. It's not super long (almost felt more like a novella than a novel), and the real plot takes awhile to get started, but I had fun being in Baba Dunja's head, so it kept me engaged. It was also interesting to read a book set in a village close to Chernobyl, full of people who had chosen not to leave their homes, still living there decades later. Not a decision I can imagine making for myself, but very intriguing to get that perspective. This was just a nice little story.

I really loved this book. It took me quite a long time to finish, but that had nothing to do with the book and everything to do with me being stubborn and lazy regarding my German. It is a gorgeous story, highly recommend.
