I chose this book from my local library after hearing positive reviews from book-tubers, so I had high hopes for Elizabeth Strout's writing. Her language and character development deserve reward and certainly lived up to expectation. Lucy Barton's mind style was relatable, beautifully written, and expressive, with comedic moments and clear perceptions of the other characters. 
However, the plot was too fast-paced and underwhelming. I found the story moved so fast within our protagonist's mind that nothing much happened. 

"I am not invisible no matter how deeply I feel that I am."

an enjoyable enough insomnia read with a strong narrative voice in the character of Lucy Barton.  I ended up feeling similarly to how I felt about My Name is Lucy Barton (I haven't read Anything is Possible).  kind of underwhelmed?  it's a pleasant read that flows well; Strout is great at using simple but effective prose.  I just think I haven't really connected or cared too much about any of the characters in these books.

I'll undoubtedly read more from Elizabeth Strout when I can't sleep, though -- her books seem to engage me on just the right level where I won't get too stressed, I might fall asleep, and the writing is straightforward enough to follow in a sleep-deprived state.  I swear this is a compliment.

I read this book in a day. My mother told me I would and I adamantly refused to believe her. But I did! This novel is a gorgeous reflection on ageing, on marriage and divorce, on mother-daughter relationships, on trauma, on inter generational trauma and overcoming it, on why we are drawn to the people we are drawn to, male ego development and the loss of thrust, introspection… it’s simply gorgeous. If you have ever been witness to complicated parental relationships, this book will speak to your soul. The realism is perfect and the grit is intentionally held back due to the first-person narration. The author holds what we might hold if we were speaking, she allows memory to lead and the prose is written in a stream of consciousness form, with rambles, with uncertainty and with lots of trailing edges. This may be annoying to some but I found myself craving Lucy’s voice far after finishing. It cements the character’s voice into your mind. I have not read any of the other novels in the series. I adored this book.

Add usual, a reflective, challenging, thought provoking book from Stout. Her writing style feels so evocative of the character so she really shows by the way she tells, I guess? Very quick read, slowly paced.
