This book is so unique I didn’t realize it was a Cinderella retelling the whole time. The world created is interesting and vibrant, the characters are 3 dimensional and likeable. I would argue they are in general a little too likeable so far, especially the main character lacks any real flaws. I think the plot and setting of this book are the jewels of the story, I would have liked a little more understanding of the systems of governance, religions, ect, but it makes sense that we experience a bit more of a day to day at different class levels. The internal dialogue got a bit tedious for me.

A very well-written YA fantasy book featuring dual point of views, chosen one trope, beautiful prose, and a kick-ass protagonist. What fell short for me is the inconsistency of pacing and it felt a little too insta-love between the FMC and the love interest for me (but the latter may be more subjective). This was my very first Tahereh Mafi book and I will definitely look into more of her books!

Reading this felt like reverting back to my pre-teen Mortal Instruments obsessed self - which I mean in the best possible way. While the language tends towards overly poetic and flowery and the pace of the plot as a result feels painstaking, Mafi begins with a pretty simple dynamic between two diametrically opposed characters and slowly unfurls the intricate threads of the political around them. Very very fun if you want to take a trip down 2014 YA lane.
