Follow-up to Conventionally Yours (2024 #37, 4/5). Jasper (nerdish) reconnects with estranged friend Milo (jock). Once joined at the hip, their friendship broke when Jasper came out. Can they become friends again - or more?
A pinch of enemies-to-lovers, a cup of opposites-attract. Jasper's need to help, to fix, clashes well with Milo's stubborn desire to solve his own problems. Milo's paralysis and fear of coming out are real. Milo changes a lot; Jasper much less.

So this is basically exactly the kind of shit that's bound to get me every time.
Was it anything new or revolutionary? No.
Did I read it in relentlessly in under 24 hours at every available opportunity? Yes.
Friends/Enemies/Lovers with great characters a heavy dose of nerd stuff and the sexy stuff is very sexy.
Sometimes you just need something frothy and comforting, and this was that for me.

Okay… LISTEN! I liked Conventionally Yours, but Out of Character was EVEN BETTER! We are still in the same world, which is exciting, because everything I loved about Book 1 continues. While we get cameos from Conrad & Aldon, they are only side characters in this book.
Jasper & Milo were best friends long before the book began, but had a falling out. So we start the book with (Semi) Enemies vibes. Which, knowing at some point we were going to get to the lovers bit made me really want it even more.
I found Jasper’s closeted jock boy with the shitty friends schtick kinda hot, because obviously I have horrible taste in men, BUT!!! He does turn it around by the end, so maybe I just like a good project.
I know this is going to end up being a longer series, but if I could make one request from Anabeth Albert, it’s that I don’t want a redemption arc for George. Let him just stay the Villain. I obviously did not like him at all and just don’t want to ever like him.

Friends to enemies to lovers trope. Although it's told from dual POV's of both main characters, Milo's arc was more dominant and integral to the story. He had a lot of growing to do and spends a good portion of the book groveling and apologizing for past behavior (totally necessary). Although the pandemic isn't referenced, Jasper's sister, April, has a blood disorder that weakens her immune system so she masks, avoids large events, socially distances, etc. I felt like her character was a small nod to the current situation.

As much as I really liked Conventionally Yours I happened to absolutely love Put of Character. Jasper and Milo have a really cute dynamic and I loved seeing their interactions throughout the book. Getting to watch their transition from enemies to friends to lovers was really nice and it flowed very naturally. Generally when reading romance books what have dual POV i find myself liking one character over the other. I’m happy to say I actually really liked both Jasper and Milo individually and even more as they became a unit together.
Jasper is our bullied in the past nerdy kid that is both witty and smart. Throughout the book we see him learn to trust and forgive Milo for the past and he even helps him get through a lot of his life hurdles.
Milo is our main antagonist for the first few chapters. Then he becomes a character we love and root for. I enjoyed getting to see how he grew from his childhood trauma. I am always a sucker for watching a character become stronger and achieve their goals.
These 2 characters relationship was really realistic and I enjoyed how plausible their story was. Most of all I liked that there wasn’t any out of pocket random conflict that just came out of nowhere.
All in all I absolutely loved this book and would have devoured it sooner had I not been so busy. 10/10 recommend.
