montalbano has existential/sociopolitical self-beef about being a cop in a world where a lot of cops are bad actors (in re real stuff that happened in italy in the early aughts but also just like the condition of copness, wheerein you are vested with semi-mystical status but also deeply fallible and so your fallibility echoes loudly). also he deals with encroaching late middle age and his wild sentimentality. the mystery itself is a little pro forma -- bad guys doing bad things -- and mostly a framework for more satisfying riffs on the glorious instrument that is salvo. a slower read than previous ones but also i was reading this when the pandemic kinda undid the world.

Questo romanzo della serie di Montalbano mi è piaciuto moltissimo soprattutto perchè accenna a dei fatti della storia italiana realmente accaduti, per esempio il G8 di Genova o la legge Bossi/Fini. E' molto bello vedere come Montalbano abbia reagito a questi fatti.

For some reason this one felt more disjointed towards the end. The cases melded well, but the state of mind Salvo is in started getting long with his exploration of the grotto. Curious to see what exactly happened to him with the chest pain that went away.
