Stephen and Lucien are pulled into another most curious case. This one involves ghost sightings followed by bouts of madness and a rather painful route to blindness. And it becomes personal for them once Lucien's servant (and friend), Merrick, becomes the latest victim. The two must work together, along with Stephen's colleagues, to track down the cause and, hopefully, the cure...
This series: what can I say? Even in the shorts like this, K.J. Charles manages to bring this world to life in a way I think few authors can. I'm continually impressed with how this series has developed and the way each installment seems like a fresh and unique look at these two guys and the mysterious, magical, and frightening world in which they live.

A little mystery with cults, moonshiners, dark sorcery, ghosts, past regrets, and eyeballs popping. What's there not to like?
My only complaint is that it was too short though this one is easily my favorite short story out of the series. Merrick had been my favorite side character since book one and it was satisfying to see him gaining layers and depth now that more of his history is revealed—damn, I want that full-length prequel even more now.

I love the idea of the tattoos moving as living magpies: they talk to them and, as a response, they mime pecks!
Anyway, it was a short insight about our characters' everyday life - someone to save, someone to find, someone to cure.
And again, I like this couple more and more.

A great morsel of a novella.
Do I need to say that I loved it?
That I LOVE Stephen and Lucian?
I think not.
The swoon
The sweet
The steam
The adventure
Lucian calling Stephen "My Sweet" is just gahhhh.
That it all.
